My Journey of Self-Acceptance: The He/She Project By Daniel Pillai

The He/She Project is an ode to myself, a celebration and acceptance of all the experiences that have led me to this point of self-expression.

I was bullied as a child in school and at home with family. I was too feminine. I acted like a girl and it was unacceptable to many around me. My family was embarrassed by me. My classmates couldn’t understand me.

Often times whenever I experienced and faced this unacceptance it was through derogatory terms such as “He/She” and different cultural variations of it by my classmates and family to distastefully highlight my feminine characteristics as an innate abnormality.

This photo editorial is my attempt to reclaim the phrase “He/She” and any variation associated with it, across any language and culture.

Today the phrase which was used to malign me and my spirit is the same phrase I use to celebrate myself through these images.

I am proud to be HE. I am proud to be SHE.
